My Surprise Visit To My Family In The Philippines
Wednesday, December 21st, 2011
As a child, I lived in a small province in Iloilo, Philippines. My family was not well off. In fact, I had to work my way to college. Through the prodding of my cousin, I took up Nursing. When I graduated, I worked one more year to be able to save enough money for the licensure exams.
After taking it, I passed. I thought to myself that I needed to go abroad because the pay in our small town was not enough because I wanted to build my mother and siblings a house. They had no one to depend on but me. So after a couple of years of volunteer work in the hospital, I applied for a job in Dubai.
I worked in Dubai for two years. I also met my husband there, a Filipino nurse, just like me. I applied for a vacation 6 months before my 2nd year, and when it was granted, I immediately took the chance. I longed to eat my favorite foods like lechon or roasted pork and “Batchoy,” and hungered for the scent of barbecued bananas.
I was only given 3 weeks for the trip. My husband was also granted a vacation, so I had to take him along. 3 months before my vacation, I went online and booked my flight. Because of the flight promos, I was able to purchase my ticket at 30% off of the original price.
I needed to stay in a hotel because our house was so crowded now. Two of my 4 siblings already got married and their wives lived in my mother’s house. I could not squeeze my husband and myself in the same house with them. I went online again and got a booking in a good and cheap local hotel in our place.
Iloilo hotels are inexpensive and what is good about them is that you actually get more for the amount you actually paid. When I got on the plane, on the way home to the Philippines, I was so excited I was trembling. My mother was already 62 years old and I can now be with her. I can now hug her and tell her I have saved enough to start building her the house I promised.
