Discover Levoca – The Hidden Gem Of Slovakia

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

It’s not surprising that there has been a growing interest in the countries east of the European Union. Slovakia has really become a tourist destination, and there are a number of cities to visit. One of the most popular cities right now however is the town of Levoca.

It’s not a huge town, in fact it only has around 15,000 people inhabiting it. Though what it does have going for it is the fact that it almost looks like an old photograph. The town is 354 kilometers from Bratislava, making it a perfect diversion for those who are looking for new sights to see. If you want to see even more, check out the national parks of Slovak Paradise and High Tatras which are actually pretty close by.

Since June 2009, the town of Levoca was recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many people believe that it deserves such recognition. There are still six watch towers and three gateways from the ancient times, and most of the buildings in the town center still have the walls they started with back in the Middle Ages.

If you take a look behind the Baroque church, there is the Kosice Gate. This was the original and main portal in the town. There is also the 14th century St. Jakob church near the town hall. It’s clear that there are many different things to see in this wonderful city, even the Cage of Shame is truly a sight to see!

The Church of St Jakob is notable especially for its magnificent example of a Gothic wooden carved altar. Made by famous local craftsman Master Paul, this is the largest example of its kind in the world and, together with 10 other winged Gothic and Renaissance altars inside the church, makes an astonishing interior.

The Cage of Shame is one site that is quite memorable, though the reasons for it being memorable are different from the other sites in the town. The Cage of Shame is a sign of ages past, when public humiliation was less than a thing of the past.

Levoca is a town that you can lose yourself in quite easily. It is a relic from the past, and a huge part of Slovakian heritage. Believe it or not, the Slovakian National Anthem was first sung in this very town. That was an event that took place in the nineteenth century.

Those looking for a good place to stay should think about the Hotel U Leva. It’s right in the town square, and is a rather beautiful building. It is a stylish building and provides a classical charm, though it doesn’t skimp on the modern necessities. The rooms have satellite televisions, and even high speed internet access. There are all sorts of facilities and shops within, and it is highly accessible to the disabled. As far as food goes, you likely will not find a better restaurant in down aside from the one in the hotel.

This town of Levoca isn’t really a ‘hot spot’, and that’s really a big part of why people visit it. Though it isn’t well known, it is a container of Slovakian history, and the people there are quite welcoming. So go take a look at this city, you won’t regret it.

During the travelling over the Eastern Europe we have luckily found this gem – Levoca town and its surroundings. We were very happy with the stay in Hotel U Leva – www.uleva.sk. It was the best accommodation we had during the journey.

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

It is always hard deciding where to go on holiday, so many people will give you their recommendations you will find it hard to make a decision. Looking on the internet for the best prices is always a good start, then if you need anymore advice you can always see a travel agent. One of the best places to find information out is the World Tourism Organisation.

Every year The World Tourism Organisation send out facts and figures representing which countries have the most tourists. This is very helpful to travel agents when selling holidays to the public.

For example the most popular country visited by tourists from around the globe is Italy, followed closely by France, Spain, UK and Germany. In fact currently around 18% of all holidaymakers travel to Europe each year for a vacation. The reason for this being is that many like to learn more about the architecture, culture and history of the many towns and cities within them.

Other popular destinations outside Europe include Africa, with Egypt being the first choice for travellers. Other countries like Rwanda, South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco are also becoming very popular amongst holidaymakers.

This year China has been attracting quite a few tourists to its shores. The main reason is because this is the year where both the Olympics and Para Olympics will be taking place. But along with China other destinations in Asia that are seeing an increase in visitors are Japan and Thailand. All of which although popular with visitors from around the world have still been able to retain much of their own identity and have not been influenced too much by our Western ways.

Along with searching the World Tourism Organisation website for what holiday destinations are the most popular, take a look at other websites such as the Independent Tour Operators. They offer a list of the top ten destinations for 2008 and their list seems to be dominated by Western European countries currently. So what are proving to the most popular ten holiday destinations in 2008 according to Independent Tour Operators?

Tresco in the Isles of Scilly has started to see a growth in visitors due to their new builds in holiday homes.

Naples in Italy has always a top favourite amongst holiday visits due to its spectacular scenery. Naples also has fantastic shops and restaurants that are always worth checking out.

Since the start of the Eurostar many travellers have been going to France, as it only take a short time from England. When in France holidaymakers will truly experience why France is so famous.

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is currently a favourite with some holiday makes, as the World Heritage site is a beautiful place to see.

Western Iceland is a fantastic place to be if you are looking to be alone or with a loved one, due to its secluded areas, this is the ultimate chill out holiday.

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico ” This is a place where many different cultures come together and where it seems that you could almost be in Egypt because of the pyramids here. Also when it comes to food you will be spoilt for choice as all cuisine here has been influenced by the Spanish, French and Lebanese.

Cook Islands, South Pacific ” This is the perfect location if you are looking for some winter sun. Currently this place seems to be proving popular with holiday makers from the UK as the pound is very strong against the New Zealand dollar.

Monte Carlo ” For many English people renewed there has been renewed interest in this city because of Lewis Hamilton winning the Formula 1 Grand Prix. However, the price of staying here is certainly not cheap and costs can rise considerably during the week of the Grand Prix.

Zambia Family Safaris ” The reason that Zambia is gaining in popularity even though many people still travel to Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana for safaris is the cost. Not only is Zambia less expensive than the other destinations we have mentioned but the accommodation is suitable for families being large tribe sized homes. Plus the variety of wildlife to be seen is just as wide as in the other countries where safaris are popular.

Togo and Benin, West Africa ” If you are looking for somewhere which offers a completely different kind of view of Africa then these are two destinations worth considering. Plus currently the number of visitors making this one of the top ten holiday destinations is currently not that many so it still remains pretty much like it has for many centuries before.
